Schwanensee (Swan Lake) • Dornröschen (The Sleeping Beauty)

Released in 1972 by Deutsche Grammophon, this recording features the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It brings together excerpts from two of Tchaikovsky’s most celebrated ballet scores, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. The release captures a peak period of the collaboration between Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, reflecting the orchestra's characteristic lush, precise, and expansive sound that defined the Deutsche Grammophon aesthetic of the 1970s.

The album was part of a larger effort by the label to showcase Karajan’s interpretations of the core Romantic repertoire for high-fidelity home listening. Karajan sought a polished, symphonic approach to these ballet suites, emphasizing dramatic tension and orchestral color over the more rhythmic, dance-oriented interpretations favored by pit conductors. Upon its release, the recording was praised for its technical brilliance and the richness of the engineering, remaining a standard reference for orchestral excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s ballet music.
