Schwanensee (Swan Lake) / Dornröschen (The Sleeping Beauty)

Released in 1972 on the Deutsche Grammophon label, this recording captures the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan performing suites from Tchaikovsky's ballets, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. The mid-1970s marked a period of high productivity for Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic as they embraced advanced studio recording techniques to refine their signature lush, precise orchestral sound, often aiming to bridge the gap between studio clarity and the emotional intensity of live performance.

The album serves as a definitive example of Karajan's late-career interpretation of Russian Romanticism. The design adheres to the classic, minimalist Deutsche Grammophon aesthetic of the era, which prioritized clean typography and high-quality photography to project an image of artistic authority. Critical reception at the time and in subsequent decades has largely lauded the technical virtuosity of the orchestra, even as some purists have noted the characteristically polished, expansive style that defined Karajan's collaborations with the label during this period.
