Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the China Record Corporation in 1975, this compilation serves as a curated anthology of works by Nie Er and Xian Xinghai, two of the most pivotal figures in modern Chinese musical history. These composers were instrumental in establishing the patriotic musical canon of the early 20th century, with their works acting as foundational anthems during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The 1975 release reflects the ongoing institutional effort during the mid-1970s to preserve and standardize these revolutionary songs for a new generation of listeners.

The album design reflects the stark, utilitarian aesthetic typical of state-produced media during this period, prioritizing clear identification of the revolutionary subject matter over complex graphic ornamentation. These compositions were crafted to mobilize the masses through accessible, stirring melodies that emphasize national unity and historical memory. Upon release, the record functioned less as a commercial product and more as a cultural document, designed to keep the legacy of the composers' ideologies prominent within the educational and social frameworks of the era.
