Where it came from
Released in 2017, Selfocracy is the debut studio album by Belgian singer-songwriter Loïc Nottet, issued through Jive and Epic Records. Following his appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015, Nottet spent significant time developing a concept-driven body of work that explored themes of ego, self-perception, and the pressures of modern identity. The record was recorded in London and Brussels, reflecting a period of intense artistic introspection as Nottet transitioned from a television personality into a more deliberate, cinematic pop auteur.
The album's design and sound were heavily influenced by Nottet’s interest in film scores and dark, theatrical pop. He worked closely with a team of producers to craft a sonic landscape that prioritized moody, string-laden arrangements and dramatic vocal performances. Critically, the album was received as an ambitious artistic statement, with many reviewers praising the cohesive storytelling and the dark, evocative aesthetic of the artwork, which visually anchors the listener in the self-reflective world the artist intended to build.
