Sham-e-Gham Kaise Guzari/A Live Ghazal Performance By: Govind Prasad Jaipurwale

Released by Polydor in 1980, this record captures a live performance by Pandit Govind Prasad Jaipurwale, a distinguished exponent of the Dilli Gharana of Indian classical music. The recording serves as a cultural artifact of the ghazal tradition, which rose to immense popularity in India during the late 1970s and early 1980s. By capturing a live concert setting, the release aims to preserve the spontaneity and emotional nuance inherent in the interaction between a classical vocalist and his audience.

The album reflects the era's broader trend of bringing niche classical and semi-classical performances to a wider domestic audience through major labels like Polydor. As a practitioner deeply rooted in the technical discipline of his gharana, Jaipurwale’s performance was received by aficionados as a testament to his vocal agility and mastery of raga-based melodies. The production emphasizes the purity of his technique, providing a stable archival record of his interpretative approach to the ghazal form.
