Where it came from
Released in 1966 by United Artists Records, this 45 RPM single features the piano duo Ferrante & Teicher performing two holiday staples. Arthur Ferrante and Louis Teicher were renowned for their 'prepared piano' technique, which involved placing various objects—such as rubber, metal, or wood—between the piano strings to produce unique, percussive tonal textures that defined their signature orchestral-pop sound during the mid-century era.
The record emerged during a period when the duo was at the height of their commercial success, consistently topping charts with their arrangements of film themes and standards. Their interpretation of 'Silent Night' and 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' applied their characteristic lush, multi-layered piano arrangement style to the holiday genre, aiming to provide a sophisticated yet accessible listen for the mid-sixties home audience.
