Where it came from
Released in 1985 on the independent Vorna-LP label, this recording serves as a cultural preservation project dedicated to the folk traditions of Kiihtelysvaara, a region in North Karelia, Finland. The collection captures the specific musical heritage of the area, featuring performers Väinö Hannikainen, Rauno Keltanen, and pianist Marita Viitasalo. It was produced during a period of renewed interest in regional Finnish folk music, aiming to document authentic local vocal and instrumental styles before they faded from common practice.
The album reflects a grassroots approach to ethnomusicology, focusing on the preservation of Karelian song forms that define the regional identity of the borderlands. By gathering these specific songs from Kiihtelysvaara, the production team sought to create a lasting auditory archive for local communities and scholars alike. It remains a niche, specialized release, valued primarily by collectors of Nordic folk music and regional ethnographic archives for its historical integrity and focus on localized oral traditions.
