Sôkyoku - Michio Miyagi's Koto Music = "Koto" Musique Par Michio Miyagi = 筝曲 宮城道雄名曲選

This recording captures the artistry of Michio Miyagi, a pivotal figure in 20th-century Japanese music who revolutionized the traditional koto. Emerging from the mid-century era, this release serves as an essential anthology of Miyagi's compositions, which are noted for bridging the gap between classical Japanese aesthetics and Western harmonic sensibilities. By introducing the seventeen-string bass koto and incorporating diverse structural elements, Miyagi transformed the koto from a static traditional instrument into a vibrant, evolving medium for contemporary expression.

The album was produced by Victor, a label deeply invested in preserving and disseminating the foundational works of Japanese classical and modern traditional music. The design reflects the mid-century Japanese aesthetic, prioritizing a clean, respectful presentation of Miyagi's repertoire that highlights his dual status as a master performer and a pioneering composer. Upon its release, the collection was received as a definitive educational and artistic document, helping to formalize the study of the 'Miyagi-ryu' school of koto music for future generations of students and listeners.
