Where it came from
Released by the Romanian state label Electrecord in 1973, this recording features the soloists of the Mureșul Artistic Ensemble from Tîrgu Mureș. The ensemble was a significant institution in Transylvania, dedicated to preserving and performing the diverse folk traditions of the region, including both Romanian and Hungarian musical heritage. This particular release highlights the Hungarian folk vocalists within the group, serving as an important document of the cultural coexistence and artistic output during the socialist period in Romania.
The album reflects the era's state-sponsored efforts to catalog and promote folk music through mass-produced vinyl. The design is representative of Electrecord’s aesthetic for regional folk releases, prioritizing clarity and regional identity. While the individual arrangers are rarely credited on such records, the vocalists sought to capture the authentic, raw style of Transylvanian Hungarian song, and the record was received primarily as a functional archive of regional folk culture for local listeners and musicologists of the time.
