Where it came from
Stories of Koo the Kiwi and Kip the Kangaroo, released under the Kiwi label with catalog number EA-38, emerged during the mid-20th century as part of a concerted effort to foster New Zealand identity in children's media. The record was produced at a time when local recording labels sought to provide domestic alternatives to the influx of American and British storytelling records that dominated the post-war nursery market.
The design of the record reflects the modest, utilitarian aesthetics of the era, focusing on clear, pedagogical storytelling intended for educational or home listening. While the specific illustrators and writers remain largely uncredited in general archives, the work is representative of a regional genre that prioritized simple, whimsical character-driven narratives meant to introduce children to native fauna through an anthropomorphic lens.
