Where it came from
Released by Supraphon in 1990, this single represents a transitional period in the career of the influential Czech country band Greenhorns. Led by Jan Vyčítal, the group was a foundational force in the Czech country and western movement, having started in the late 1960s. The song 'To tenkrát v čtyřicátom pátom' reflects Vyčítal’s long-standing penchant for incorporating historical narratives and local Czech themes into the traditional American country musical framework.
The record pairs this local thematic composition with a version of Marty Robbins' 'Tonight Carmen'. This pairing highlights the band’s aesthetic mission: to bridge the gap between classic American country music and their own national folk sensibilities. Vyčítal was known for his distinct, gravelly vocal delivery and his ability to adapt Western iconography for a domestic audience, a practice that defined the Greenhorns' longevity and sustained their popularity through various political shifts in Czechoslovakia.
