Where it came from
Released in 1984 by Electrecord, the state-owned Romanian record label, this album captures the virtuosic skill of Ion Albeșteanu, a prominent figure in traditional Romanian lăutari music. During this period, Electrecord served as the primary cultural vehicle for documenting national musical heritage, and the recording reflects the label's commitment to preserving the complex, improvisational violin techniques characteristic of the Balkan folk tradition.
The album is a quintessential example of the aesthetic approach favored by Electrecord’s studio engineers, who aimed to provide a polished, balanced capture of authentic folk performance. Albeșteanu, a master of his craft, utilized the studio setting to showcase a diverse repertoire of dance melodies and lyrical suites. The record was received as a significant archival contribution, highlighting the enduring influence of the violin in Romanian social and ceremonial life throughout the twentieth century.
