Where it came from
Unsettling Scores was released in 2022 by the experimental musician and producer Lamin Fofana on the label Peak Oil. The work represents a continuation of Fofana's rigorous sonic practice, which frequently bridges the gap between club music, ambient textures, and sound art to explore complex themes regarding migration, displacement, and the black experience in the contemporary world.
The album is noted for its evocative and minimalist design, which complements the layered, often haunting compositions contained within. Fofana sought to create a sonic landscape that felt both deeply personal and globally significant, utilizing rhythmic instability and field recordings. Upon release, the project was received by critics as a meditative and challenging addition to his catalog, praised for its ability to balance stark abstraction with profound emotional weight.
