Where it came from
Volume 12 is a collaborative effort between the German experimental musician Holger Hiller and the project Hell Vice, released on the independent imprint Dark & Lovely in 2008. Hiller, known for his pioneering work in the Neue Deutsche Welle scene and his unique approach to sampling, maintains a reputation for avant-garde minimalism that challenges standard pop structures. This record serves as a testament to his continued exploration of electronic textures, blending jagged rhythms with fragmented, often cryptic vocal delivery.
The release reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the early 2000s experimental electronic scene, where labels like Dark & Lovely prioritized limited pressings and distinct, non-commercial production. The design is stark and focused, mirroring the minimalist sonic quality of the music within. It arrived during a period in which Hiller was selectively issuing material, making it a sought-after entry for followers of his specific post-punk and experimental lineage.
