Where it came from
Released in 1955 by the French label Erato, this record is the second installment in a scholarly survey titled 'Histoire de la Musique Vocale du Grégorien à 1750.' The series was conceived during a mid-century revival of interest in early European music, a period when French musicologists and institutions sought to archive and disseminate liturgical and secular vocal works that had largely disappeared from the standard concert repertoire.
The design of the Erato LDE 3019 reflects the austere, academic aesthetic of mid-1950s classical documentation, prioritizing historical accuracy over commercial flair. The recordings were conducted under the rigorous supervision of experts dedicated to authentic period performance, and the series was well-received by contemporary music critics who valued the label's commitment to making the evolution of polyphonic and choral music accessible to listeners and students of musicology.
