Where it came from
X-mas Card From Outer Space, released by the label Domestica in 2017, serves as a curated archival compilation of the 'Oscar's X-mas Carols' series. These original recordings were produced between 1984 and 1987, emerging from a period of experimental underground pop and home-taping culture where artists sought to subvert the traditional festive music canon through unconventional arrangements and lo-fi aesthetics.
The collection captures the distinct creative ethos of the original participants, who approached the holiday genre with a blend of satire and sonic exploration. By reissuing these tracks, Domestica aimed to preserve a niche slice of music history, framing these recordings not just as seasonal oddities, but as documents of an era defined by grassroots creative output and the democratization of music production via four-track recorders.
