Where it came from
Released in 2021 on the Mofunk Records label, this collaborative project between XL Middleton and Delmar Xavier VII stands as a contemporary testament to the modern funk movement. Mofunk Records, based in Los Angeles, has cultivated a specific sound that bridges the gap between classic 1980s synth-funk and modern production sensibilities, and this release functions as a core piece of that label’s identity.
The record serves as a showcase for the label's signature aesthetic, which favors analog synthesizers, talkbox melodies, and the laid-back, groove-oriented atmosphere of West Coast funk. The design and soundscape were curated to evoke a nostalgic yet fresh interpretation of G-funk and boogie, finding favor within niche communities of funk collectors who prioritize high-fidelity, genre-specific craftsmanship and the preservation of the Southern California musical lineage.
