Where it came from
Released in 2021 on the Mofunk Records label, this collaborative project between XL Middleton and Delmar Xavier VII stands as a contemporary staple of the modern West Coast funk revival. XL Middleton, a pivotal figure in the G-funk and modern funk scene, teamed up with Xavier to blend synthesized grooves with a signature polished production style, aiming to bridge the gap between classic 1980s boogie aesthetics and current independent sensibilities.
The record is a hallmark of Mofunk Records, an imprint widely respected for its role in sustaining the legacy of synthesizer-heavy funk in Los Angeles. The design and sonic direction prioritize authentic analog warmth, reflecting a deliberate effort to capture the atmosphere of early digital-era dance music. Upon its release, the project was noted by enthusiasts of the genre for its tight arrangements and adherence to the label’s cohesive, high-fidelity aesthetic.
