X-Tra, X-Tra- Read All About It / Painted Smile

Released in 1969 on the Original Sound label, this single by Mad Andy's Twist Combo captures the late-sixties trend of novelty pop groups capitalizing on the resurgence of dance-oriented rock and roll. The track was designed to fit within the label's focus on catchy, radio-friendly singles that could gain traction in the regional jukebox market, leaning into a sound that bridged the gap between traditional upbeat surf rock and the changing psychedelic pop landscape of the late decade.

The identity of the musicians behind Mad Andy's Twist Combo remains largely shrouded in the anonymity typical of studio-based production projects of that era. Like many releases from Art Laboe's Original Sound imprint, the music was crafted for danceability and immediate listener engagement rather than critical prestige. While it did not achieve significant chart success, the record remains a point of interest for collectors of late-sixties minor label curiosities, reflecting the era's experimentation with genre fusion.
