Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the Buffalo label, Xidundlha Xa Mina/ Xigodo Lexi is a significant artifact of the Tsonga disco and traditional dance music scene emerging from Southern Africa during the 1980s. This era was characterized by the experimental blending of local rhythmic patterns with the increasing accessibility of electronic synthesisers and studio production, a sound often championed by labels like Buffalo that provided a platform for regional artists to reach wider audiences.
The recording serves as a quintessential example of the aesthetic trends of its time, focusing on driving percussion and vocal arrangements that mirror the vibrant social culture of the period. While specific design credits for the sleeve art remain obscure, the visual presentation follows the standard industry practice of the mid-eighties for the region, utilizing bold, high-contrast imagery intended to stand out in the crowded bins of local record shops and market stalls.
