Originally released in 1970 under the title 'Lute Music of the 16th and 17th Centuries,' the album was famously attributed to various Renaissance composers. Most notably, the track 'Ave Maria' was falsely credited to Giulio Caccini, though it was composed by Vavilov himself. The 1990 reissue on the Melodiya label, catalog number 33 СМ 02059-60, preserved these attributions, reflecting the initial mystery surrounding the source material.

The aesthetic of the record reflects the Soviet cultural appetite for early music during the mid-20th century, a period when baroque and renaissance styles gained traction among independent performers.
