Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the state-run Melodiya label in 1981, this recording is part of a broader series dedicated to archiving the rich tapestry of Russian poetry across three centuries. The production serves as a cultural repository, preserving the oral tradition of verses that defined the literary landscape from the Enlightenment era through the turbulent twentieth century.

This specific installment focuses on the powerful, declamatory work of Vladimir Mayakovsky. As the primary voice of the Russian Futurist movement, Mayakovsky’s poetry was designed to be heard aloud, emphasizing rhythmic innovation and revolutionary fervor. By the time this pressing was released, the recording served both as a historical document and as a standard educational resource, reflecting the Soviet Union’s institutional commitment to canonizing Mayakovsky as the quintessential poet of the proletariat.
