Старинная Русская Хоровая Мусыка XVII-XVIII Веков

Released by the state-run Soviet label Melodiya in 1990, this recording captures the liturgical and secular choral traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries in Russia. It emerged during the final years of the Soviet Union, a period marked by a significant resurgence in interest regarding pre-revolutionary cultural and religious heritage. The Moscow Choir, known for its expertise in historical performance practice, was tasked with reviving the complex polyphonic styles and znamenny chant traditions that had been largely suppressed or marginalized throughout the early and mid-20th century.

The production sought to provide a scholarly and atmospheric interpretation of the Russian Baroque and pre-Petrine musical transition. By documenting these ancient scores through the lens of a highly disciplined professional choir, the release served as an important archival project, preserving acoustic textures that were regaining public and academic relevance as the Soviet cultural landscape opened up. It remains a representative example of Melodiya's late-era output, focusing on the preservation of classical Russian choral repertoire for both domestic listeners and international musicologists.
