Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1979 by the Soviet state-owned label Melodiya, this recording of early organ music reflects the era's focus on historical performance practice and the systematic documentation of classical masterworks. Harry Grodberg, a distinguished Soviet organist who studied under Alexander Goedicke, was instrumental in championing the repertoire of the 12th to 18th centuries in the Soviet Union, often performing on the high-quality instruments housed in Moscow and throughout the Baltic states.

The album serves as a curated anthology of European organ traditions, bridging medieval and baroque styles. Grodberg’s interpretation was widely noted for its technical precision and austere aesthetic, aligning with the scholarly approach common to Melodiya’s classical catalog during the late 1970s. As a record label, Melodiya functioned as the primary vehicle for preserving and disseminating the performances of elite Soviet musicians, and this specific release remains a significant example of Grodberg’s lifelong dedication to the instrument's historical canon.
