Where it came from
Released in 2013 on the Chicago-based label Candela Rising, this EP represents a distinct entry in the discography of Paul Birken, a producer recognized for his contribution to the industrial and hardware-focused techno scene. The record, catalogued as CAN003, captures a period where the label was curating a raw, abrasive sound that leaned heavily into analog synthesis and gritty, high-energy production techniques.
The design and sonic aesthetic of the EP reflect Birken’s long-standing approach to music, which prioritizes tactile, modular synthesis and a lack of polish. By this point in his career, Birken had established a reputation for compositions that emphasize texture and distortion. This release was received as a quintessential example of his style, aimed at listeners who gravitate toward the harsher, more confrontational fringes of electronic dance music.
