Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1978 under the Opus label, this two-record set, titled Zvykoslovné Obrázky Zo Slovenska, serves as an ethnographic document of Slovak folk culture. The compilation was produced as part of the Z Klenotnice Ľudovej Hudby (From the Treasury of Folk Music) series, an ambitious project aimed at archiving and preserving the diverse musical traditions and ritualistic performances of various Slovak regions before they were lost to modernization.

The album captures authentic field recordings and studio performances of traditional rites associated with the agrarian calendar, including weddings, harvest celebrations, and seasonal observances. The design and curation reflect the scholarly interest of the Czechoslovak state in ethnographic preservation during the 1970s. While intended primarily for institutional use and academic study, the collection gained appreciation among enthusiasts of Eastern European ethnomusicology for its commitment to maintaining regional dialects and indigenous instrumentation.
