Lore

Why it matters

This collection serves as a vital archival effort by the Opus label to preserve the authentic sounds of Slovak folklore through a structured series of traditional ritual music. For collectors of Eastern European ethnography, this release is prized for its dedication to documenting specific regional customs and soundscapes that were increasingly rare even at the time of its 1977 release.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1977 by the Czechoslovak state-owned label Opus, Z Klenotnice Ľudovej Hudby: Zvykoslovné Obrázky Zo Slovenska serves as a significant archival project documenting the folk traditions of Slovakia. The album was produced during a period when the label focused heavily on preserving regional musical heritage, aiming to provide a scholarly and authentic representation of ritual-based folk performances, songs, and instrumental styles that were fading from daily life.

The album is part of a broader series dedicated to the 'treasure chest' of folk music, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of mid-70s ethnomusicology in Central Europe. The design emphasizes a cultural conservationist approach, prioritizing archival recordings and detailed documentation over commercial appeal. It was well-received by folklorists and cultural institutions for its commitment to maintaining the integrity of traditional Slovak customs and musical structures.
