Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1979 by the state-owned Czechoslovak label Opus, this double album represents a significant effort to archive and preserve the rural musical traditions of Slovakia. Part of the broader 'Klenotnica Ľudovej Hudby' or 'Treasury of Folk Music' series, the project was curated to document the customs, rituals, and ceremonial songs associated with the turning points of the agricultural and liturgical calendar, capturing authentic performances that were rapidly fading under modernization.

The album reflects the era's socialist-era commitment to ethnographic preservation, featuring meticulous field recordings and studio arrangements of traditional regional songs. While the design and presentation were standard for Opus releases of the time—utilizing sparse, archival-focused graphic design—the collection is highly regarded by ethnomusicologists for its dedication to regional specificity, ensuring that the diverse vocal and instrumental styles of Slovakia's distinct ethnographic regions were captured for future generations.
