Where it came from
Dark Necrofear was originally introduced as an ultra-rare card in the 2002 'Labyrinth of Nightmare' expansion, designed as the signature card for the character Bakura in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime. Its design features a dark, spectral aesthetic reflective of the series' occult-themed plotlines, aiming to provide a high-level boss monster for Fiend-type decks through its unique ability to possess opponent monsters after being sent to the Graveyard.
The specific version designated DL2-EN002 was released as part of the Duelist League Series 2, a recurring promotional event series hosted by Konami to encourage local hobby shop participation. Issued as a super-rare variant, this printing allowed players to acquire a high-utility tournament card through event participation rather than traditional booster pack randomization, solidifying its place as a recognizable staple in early competitive play.
