Hinotama Soul was released as part of the Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon set, the inaugural Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG booster release in North America in 2002. This set served as the foundation for the Western game, translating the mechanics and lore originally established in the Japanese OCG by Konami. As a common card, it was widely distributed among the initial wave of hobbyist packs, designed to populate player decks with accessible monsters that fit the elemental themes of early dueling.

The card features a creature composed of living flame, consistent with the fire-attribute aesthetic defined by Kazuki Takahashi’s conceptual universe. The design centers on the mythological concept of the 'hitodama' or spirit orb, rendered in the classic early-2000s card frame that prioritized readability and straightforward attack-and-defense values. While it never achieved the competitive prominence of iconic cards from the same set, its presence defined the early gameplay experience, where simple monster cards provided the essential building blocks for novice players learning the game's mechanics.
