Kotodama

Kotodama was introduced in the Spell Ruler booster set, released as the third core expansion of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in early 2002. The set was pivotal for introducing ritual magic and continuous spell cards to the game, significantly broadening the strategic landscape for players who were previously limited by the earlier starter decks and Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon releases.

The card’s design reflects the early aesthetic of the game’s monster card pool, featuring the concept of 'Kotodama,' or the Japanese belief in the mystical power of words. It was illustrated in the distinct, often jagged style prevalent in the initial series of monster cards. While it did not see widespread competitive success, it remains a notable example of the early attempt to incorporate specific utility effects—in this case, restricting the presence of multiple monsters of the same attribute—into the game's mechanics.
