Kotodama

Kotodama was originally released in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game as part of the Dark Beginning 1 booster set, which served as a compilation set designed to reprint high-demand cards from earlier expansions. The card itself was originally introduced in the Magic Ruler (later renamed Spell Ruler) set, reflecting the game's early focus on intricate counter-play mechanics that sought to punish opponents for over-extending their field presence.

The design of Kotodama leans into the theme of spectral spirits, with its name referencing the Japanese concept of the mystical power residing in words. Mechanically, the card acts as a restrictive floodgate, forcing players to discard if they summon more than one monster of a specific attribute. While it rarely saw competitive tournament play due to its situational nature, it remains a notable example of the early experimental design philosophy utilized by Konami to manage game balance.
