Kotodama

Kotodama was released in the Magic Ruler expansion, which debuted in North America in 2002 as the third core booster set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This set is historically significant for introducing Spell Cards and expanding the tactical depth of the game beyond simple beatdown strategies. The card itself, categorized as an effect monster, reflects the game's shift toward more complex board control mechanics common in the early Konami era.

The design of Kotodama is rooted in Japanese folklore, specifically the concept of kotodama, or 'word spirit,' which suggests that words hold mystical power. The card's effect, which forces players to discard a monster if they summon one while another is already face-up, serves as an early iteration of floodgate-style disruption. Like many common cards from the Magic Ruler set, its illustration was created by Konami's in-house design team to fit the established dark fantasy aesthetic of the franchise.
