Kotodama

Kotodama was originally released in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game as part of the Turbo Pack: Booster Seven set in 2012. The card itself originates from the Japanese OCG set Labyrinth of Nightmare, which debuted in the early 2000s, reflecting an era of the game where card effects focused on restricting specific monster types to manipulate board control. Its design centers on the concept of 'spirit words,' a traditional Japanese belief that mystical power resides in spoken language, which is visually represented by the creature's ghostly, ethereal form.

The card was illustrated with a focus on eerie, supernatural aesthetics common to early Konami card design. As a common rarity in a Turbo Pack—a series specifically distributed to tournament locations rather than standard retail stores—Kotodama was primarily intended for players looking to tech against strategies reliant on multiple monster attributes. It has maintained a modest presence as a niche sideboard option throughout its history, valued more for its historical role in anti-meta play than for widespread competitive dominance.
