Where it came from
After-school Hanako-kun is a spin-off television series based on the popular manga series by Iro Aida. Produced by Studio Lerche and released in 2023, the series was designed to complement the original supernatural narrative by focusing on the lighthearted, daily lives of the characters at Kamome Academy. The production aimed to lean into a more comedic and relaxed tone compared to the dramatic arcs of the main series, offering fans a glimpse into the mundane antics of the ghost Hanako and his companions.
The visual direction for the series maintained the unique, high-contrast aesthetic that has become synonymous with Iro Aida's work, utilizing a distinct color palette that emphasizes a storybook-like quality. Following its release on TBS, the show was received as a gentle, episodic expansion of the franchise's world, successfully capturing the charm of the original character dynamics while providing a lower-stakes viewing experience for established enthusiasts of the series.
