Where it came from
Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files was released in 2007 as a six-episode original video animation series, serving as a direct interquel set between the original 1983 television series and its sequel episodes. Directed by franchise creator Ryosuke Takahashi, the production sought to revisit the gritty, grounded realism that defined the original series while utilizing modern digital animation techniques to depict the brutal, industrial combat of the Armored Trooper mechs.
The narrative focuses on the enigmatic military commander Ypsilon Pailsen and his fixation on the protagonist Chirico Cuvie, exploring the psychological and tactical experiments conducted during the Hundred Year War. Design-wise, the project remained faithful to the iconic 'botom' aesthetic established by Kunio Okawara, prioritizing functional, utilitarian machinery over stylized hero mechs, a choice that resonated deeply with longtime fans who appreciated the franchise's consistent commitment to bleak, militaristic science fiction.
