Armored Trooper Votoms: Vol.1 Stories of the 'A.T. VOTOMS'

Armored Trooper Votoms: Vol.1 Stories of the A.T. VOTOMS was released in 1985 as a compilation OVA that served to introduce the gritty, low-fantasy world of the original 1983 television series to a broader home video audience. Following the conclusion of the series, Sunrise utilized this release to consolidate key narrative beats, effectively bridging the gap between the original broadcast and the subsequent expanding OAV franchise that solidified the show's cult status among fans of mecha realism.

The visual design of the series, overseen by mechanical designer Kunio Okawara, departed from the sleek, heroic aesthetic of contemporary robot anime. Okawara aimed for a utilitarian, industrial look where mechs, known as Armored Troopers, were treated as mass-produced, expendable tools of war. The series was well-received by critics for its cynical, grounded approach to the mecha genre, often credited with shifting the tone of 1980s Japanese animation toward more mature and militaristic storytelling.
