Where it came from
Armored Trooper Votoms: Pailsen Files was released in 2009 as a compilation film, condensing the six-part original video animation series that premiered in 2007. It serves as a narrative bridge between the classic 1983 television series and the events of the original Votoms timeline, focusing on protagonist Chirico Cuvie’s experiences as a subject of the immortal soldier experiments conducted by Colonel Pailsen.
Produced by Studio MASAKA, the project was directed by franchise creator Ryosuke Takahashi, who aimed to revisit the gritty, grounded realism that defined the original series while utilizing modern digital animation techniques. The production was well-received by long-time fans for its adherence to the dark, survivalist tone of the franchise, successfully expanding the lore of the 'Perfect Soldier' project without alienating the established aesthetic of the series.
