Released in 1985, this OVA tells a critical part of the story between the TV show's Uoodo and Kummen arcs. Although the TV series covered the Red Shoulders in some detail, we didn't get to see much of Chirico's time there or the people involved, and we get both of those here.

Where it came from
Released in 1985, The Last Red Shoulder serves as the first original video animation installment in the Armored Trooper Votoms franchise. It acts as a bridge between the television series and subsequent spin-offs, focusing on the protagonist Chirico Cuvie as he reunites with his former comrades from the infamous Red Shoulder Battalion. The production was intended to expand on the gritty, military-focused lore of the original show, further exploring the dark legacy of the character's past during the Hundred Year War.
The animation was produced by Sunrise under the direction of Ryosuke Takahashi, who sought to maintain the industrial, 'real robot' aesthetic that defined the series. The mechanical designs emphasize functional, utilitarian aesthetics that contrast with the more polished heroic robots of the era. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the original television run for its darker tone and its successful expansion of the complex political and military themes that Takahashi established, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of 1980s mecha anime.
