Where it came from
Released in 1986, The Big Battle serves as an original video animation epilogue to the seminal 1983 television series Armored Trooper Votoms. Produced by Sunrise and directed by franchise creator Ryosuke Takahashi, the project was developed to provide fans with a high-fidelity conclusion to the saga of Chirico Cuvie. It captures the gritty, industrial aesthetic that defined the series, focusing on the tactical mechanics of the Armored Troopers, or ATs, in a high-stakes combat environment.
The animation was spearheaded by the same creative team that established the show's cult status, including mechanical designer Kunio Okawara. Okawara utilized the expanded budget and creative freedom afforded by the OVA format to refine the mechanical designs, emphasizing a sense of weight and realistic operational wear. Upon its release, the production was well-received by the dedicated Votoms fanbase for its technical precision and its ability to maintain the bleak, stoic atmosphere that distinguished the franchise from more conventional mecha anime of the mid-1980s.
