Synopsis

In the future, a junior high student, Kusakabe Sakura, will offend God by inventing immortality so that women will stop aging after they turn twelve. Dokuro-chan is an angel from the future sent to kill him. However, Dokuro-chan thinks that Sakura can be spared, so her idea is to constantly occupy Sakura so that he will never be able to invent the technology. Sometimes the angel will go crazy and kill him with her bat, Excalibolg, but she can revive him easily. "Pi-piru-piru-piru-pi-piru-pi!"

Provenance

Where it came from

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan originated as a light novel series written by Masaki Okayu, which was subsequently adapted into a surreal slapstick OVA series in 2005 by the animation studio Hal Film Maker. The narrative centers on a dark-comedy premise where a divine assassin is sent from the future to prevent the protagonist from inventing a technology that would grant humans immortality. The series gained notoriety for its aggressive tonal shifts, balancing extreme, cartoonish violence with mundane slice-of-life tropes.

The character design and visual direction were intended to juxtapose the innocent, magical-girl aesthetic typical of the mid-2000s anime boom with gruesome, exaggerated consequences. Upon its release, the OVA received a polarized reception; while it cultivated a dedicated cult following for its unconventional subversion of anime archetypes and its high-energy, chaotic pacing, its reliance on shock value and dark humor remained a point of debate among critics and audiences within the niche otaku subculture.
