Where it came from
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan 2 was released in 2007 as a direct sequel to the original 2005 original video animation series based on the light novel written by Masaki Okayu. Produced by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan and animated by Hal Film Maker, the series continues the surreal slapstick comedy centered on Dokuro-chan, an assassin from the future sent to prevent the invention of immortality, only to perpetually bludgeon the protagonist Sakura Kusakabe with her spiked club.
The character designs were handled by Kazuya Kuroda, who aimed to maintain the stark aesthetic contrast between the pastel-colored, innocent-looking magical girl tropes and the extreme, gore-filled violence that defined the series' dark humor. While the original series gained a cult following for its unconventional subversion of the magical girl genre, the sequel was received primarily by fans of the first series, noted for pushing the boundaries of its comedic absurdity and signature absurdist brutality.
