BRONZE: ZETSUAI since 1989

Released in 1996, the Zetsuai 1989 OVA is an adaptation of Minami Ozaki’s influential manga, which began serialization in 1989. Produced by Production I.G, the project sought to translate the intense, dramatic aesthetic of the original source material into animation, capturing the volatile and emotionally fraught relationship between a famous pop star and a professional soccer player. It emerged during a pivotal era for the shonen-ai genre, representing one of the first major attempts to bring such complex, character-driven narratives to the direct-to-video market.

The adaptation is noted for its ambitious visual style, which reflects the ornate and expressive character designs synonymous with Ozaki’s work during the late 1980s and early 90s. While the production faced challenges in condensing the sprawling, slow-burn nature of the manga into a single episode, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of 90s anime for its distinctive atmospheric direction and its role in establishing the visual language that would eventually define many subsequent titles in the genre.
