When I was a kid, my big brother became obsessed with the 90s Japanese subculture of teenage guys who were known as “Gyaru-o.” His odd appearance totally mystified me so I started to sneak into his room to look for his secrets.

Where it came from
Brother, a short animated film produced at the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) in 2008, emerged from the institution's esteemed graduate animation program. It serves as a representative work of the school's commitment to nurturing individual artistic expression and experimental narrative techniques within the Japanese animation landscape. The film reflects a period where student-led animation projects began gaining significant international recognition for their distinct, non-commercial aesthetic and technical rigor.
The film is celebrated for its evocative visual language and emotional depth, characteristic of the Geidai department's focus on hand-crafted artistry. By prioritizing character-driven storytelling over the conventions of mainstream studio productions, the creators aimed to explore intimate human connections. It was well-received upon its festival run, garnering attention for the nuanced animation style that has become a hallmark of the Geidai collective's broader output.
