Where it came from
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card was produced by Madhouse and released in 2018, serving as a direct sequel to the iconic 1990s magical girl series. Created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original manga, the series picks up with Sakura Kinomoto as she enters junior high school, only to discover that her magical cards have turned blank. This narrative catalyst allowed the creative team to reintroduce the beloved cast while exploring new visual territories within the familiar framework of Clamp's magical girl genre.
The series remains heavily influenced by the distinct aesthetic established by the manga collective Clamp, whose intricate, floral-heavy character designs define the franchise. Madhouse focused on modernizing the animation quality while retaining the delicate, dreamlike atmosphere of the original. The production was generally well-received by fans and critics alike, praised for successfully capturing the gentle, earnest tone of the source material while showcasing the technical evolution of digital animation in the decades since the original series concluded.
