Chouon Senshi Borgman

Chouon Senshi Borgman debuted in 1988 as a quintessential product of the late eighties science fiction anime boom. Produced by Ashi Productions, the series was designed to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of the era, blending cyberpunk motifs with the popular subgenre of powered armor combat. It depicted a near-future Tokyo transformed into a post-apocalyptic cityscape, where a group of heroes utilized high-tech cybernetic suits to defend humanity against extraterrestrial threats.

The character designs were handled by the influential artist Michitaka Kikuchi, later known professionally as Kia Asamiya. His vision for the Borgman suits emphasized sleek, functional lines and distinct color coding, which helped bridge the gap between traditional sentai hero archetypes and the more mature, atmospheric storytelling of late-decade OVAs and television programs. While the series enjoyed a dedicated following during its original broadcast, it is perhaps best remembered today for its contribution to the aesthetic evolution of the mecha and powered-suit genre.
