Where it came from
City Hunter: Goodbye My Sweetheart was produced by Sunrise in 1997 as a feature-length television special. It serves as a narrative continuation of the long-running franchise based on the manga by Tsukasa Hojo, focusing on the exploits of Ryo Saeba, a skilled private eye who operates in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. The special was created to maintain the momentum of the series in the late nineties, blending the franchise's signature mix of high-stakes action, underworld intrigue, and character-driven comedy.
The production leans into the established visual identity of the City Hunter anime, characterized by Kenji Kodama's direction and the iconic character designs that define the series' gritty yet playful aesthetic. The special was received by fans as a faithful extension of the source material, capturing the established dynamic between Ryo and his partner, Kaori Makimura. It is regarded as a quintessential piece of 1990s anime output that bridges the gap between the original eighties run and the modern revival of the property.
