Where it came from
City Hunter: Million Dollar Conspiracy was released in 1990 as the second theatrical feature film based on the popular manga series by Tsukasa Hojo. Produced by the studio Sunrise, the film arrived during the height of the franchise's animation run in Japan, serving as a standalone story that captured the signature blend of hard-boiled detective tropes, slapstick comedy, and high-stakes action that defined the Ryo Saeba character.
The film was directed by Kenji Kodama, a veteran of the City Hunter anime series who was instrumental in translating Hojo’s stylistic, character-driven art into motion. The production aimed to deliver a cinematic-scale mystery involving a high-profile assassination attempt, effectively scaling up the series' typical episodic structure to fit a longer, feature-length narrative. It was received as a quintessential entry for fans of the era, cementing the series' place as a landmark of late 1980s and early 1990s Japanese action-comedy animation.
