City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust

City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust was produced by Aniplex and released in 2023 to celebrate the long-running franchise created by Tsukasa Hojo. The film serves as a significant entry in the series, revisiting the adventures of Ryo Saeba, a professional sweeper working in the criminal underworld of Shinjuku. It was developed to tie back to the foundational elements of Hojo's original manga, specifically exploring the history of the Angel Dust drug, which is a pivotal plot point that connects directly to the protagonist's past and the origins of his partnership with Kaori Makimura.

The film was directed by Kenji Kodama, a veteran of the franchise who has guided the series through its various animated iterations since the 1980s. The production team aimed to balance nostalgic appeal for long-term fans with modern animation standards, maintaining the distinct character designs and comedic tone that defined the original series while introducing a more intricate narrative arc. Upon its release in Japan, the movie was received as a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of the character, particularly for its success in weaving together decades of continuity into a single cinematic feature.
