Where it came from
City Hunter: The Secret Service was produced by Sunrise in 1996 as a television special, marking a return to the long-running franchise created by Tsukasa Hojo. Following the success of the original manga and the subsequent television series, this special was designed to revitalize the character of Ryo Saeba for a mid-90s audience. It leans into the established mix of hard-boiled detective action, comedic misunderstandings, and the signature underworld dynamics that defined the series since its debut in the early 1980s.
The animation direction and character designs were crafted to maintain the familiar aesthetic of Hojo’s work, which emphasizes a blend of gritty urban atmosphere and stylized character portrayals. Upon release, the special was received as a nostalgic revisit for fans of the franchise, serving as a standalone entry that balanced the series’ trademark slapstick humor with the high-stakes bodyguard missions that center Ryo’s complex moral code.
